WRITE A BOOK APPRAISAL

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD BOOK APPRAISAL

A good appraisal must have the following information:

- factual information: the when (date), what (the type of the book), who (the author) etc
- the title of the book
- a short description of the settings and characters
- a summary of the plot (about two paragraphs): include the turning point and the most interesting aspect of the story
- your opinion: use an adjective, for example, horrible story
- context of the story: background of the characters
- your reaction, for example: you didn´t put down the book until you finished it
- use of simple present
- use of superlatives

A possible way to organize it:

Paragraph 1:
the facts about the book: the author, when it was published, etc

Paragraph 2
setting, characters, plot

Paragraph 3
continuation of the plot, the turning point

Paragraph 4:
the reasons you liket it or not and the conclusion

JUNE FESTIVAL

FESTAS JUNINAS/Junina parties

The June Festivities in Brazil are held to celebrate Saint Anthony on June 13, Saint John on June 23 and Saint Peter on 29. Since they are religious events, they take place near churches and are organized by church community members or church goers. Schools and other institutions as well as residential condos also organize some social activities for students and the local community usually both as a fund raising and entertainment event.
Prep
arations include, besides setting up stalls for selling food and drink, designating who is gonna play the part of the groom and the bride in the typical folkloric dance, the so called “quadrilha” (square dance). On the actual “quermesse” days, people will eat pop corn, corn on the cob, coconut sweet, “canjica” (sweet made of corn), “paçoca” (sweet made of peanuts), "arroz doce" (sweet made of rice), “bolo de fubá” (corn meal cake), sweet potato, and also ordinary food like spaghetti, cod dumpling or pizza. Hot wine and “quentão”, made of pinga (brandy) and ginger are typical drinks. The dancers, usually kids, will wear a costume: floral patterned dresses with laces and ribbons for girls, a plaided shirt with ripped and patched trousers for boys, and a straw hat for both.
People say Brazilian people are festive and happy people, that every occasion is opportunity for having fun, is that so?

JOB INTERVIEW PRACTICE

HOW TO GET READY FOR JOB INTERVIEWS

Practice - A MODEL INTERVIEW
A teenager is having her first interview. She wants to be a receptionist at a renowned publicity agency. (I stands for interviewer and A for applicant)

I- Please, have a seat. Would you like some water?
A- Yes, please/ No, thanks.
I- I´d like to ask a few questions.
A- Sure! /Certainly, go ahead/ shoot
I- I understand you want to apply for the position of bilingual receptionist here

A- Yes, I do. I think it´s a great opportunity.
I- Have you worked before?
A- Only as a freelance model, but since I´ve just turned 18, I´ve only been studying so far.
I- And now you would like a job?
A- Yes, absolutely. I heard good things about this company, I know it´s a great communication agency and it seems I´ll have prospects for the future here, I mean a career, won´t I?
I- Have you been told about the work schedule/ shift?
A- Yes. I´ve been told that I´ll have to work from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to begin with, but then that later I´ll be able to change my schedule so that I can go to college.
I_ Do you have any questions?
A_ Yes, just to confirm, How much will I get paid?
I_ R$1,800.00 plus HMO, transportation and you´ll be given a card worth R$17 a day for your meals.
A_ For someone´s first job it´s really great, it´ll help a lot. What about uniform? I´ve been told that you´ll provide me one, is it correct?
I_ yeah, we´ll give you a black coat with black social pants and a white shirt but you´re allowed to wear a colorful t-shirt, instead.

Notes: Observe that the applicant considered all the interviewer´s statements as questions. The applicant is applying for a bilingual position, so she has to show she can speak English.
Note also the use of Present Perfect Tense, the Tag question, and the Passive Voice.

THE FORM OF THE VERB THAT FOLLOWS ANOTHER VERB

VERBS AFTER VERBS
I)Verbs followed by verbs in the infinitive translation

I´ll give 4 lists of verbs where the verbs that follow them are translated in Portuguese by infinitive -ar, -er, -ir

List 1) List of verbs followed by the infinitives of other verbs

Verb + to + verb in the infinitive form

A lot of verbs are followed by the infinitive form with “to” + the simple form of the verb.

For example, the verb to want = querer.
I can use a noun after it: want + object
I want some water
Or I can use a verb after it: want + verb. In this case I use “to”
I want to drink some water = Eu quero beber água (forma infinitiva)

Observe that in the example (want + object pronoun + verb) I want you to drink a lot of water = Eu quero que você beba muita água (forma subjuntiva)After want + an object pronoun it´s the subjunctive translation rather than the infinitive, only the form is infinitive

Common mistake due to literal tranlation from Portuguese: I want that you (erro devido à tradução direta do português, inserindo que = that)

Reference List of verbs followed by the infinitive:

List 2) Verb + Verb in the infinitive form (without “to”)
The verbs make, let and help are followed by an object pronoun plus another verb in the infinitive form.

Ex.: I made him do it
He let me do it
She´ll help you do this
.

Other verbs used with an object and infinitive without “to” construction are the verbs of sensation or perception (see, hear, observe, watch, notice, feel, smell)

List 3) Verbs followed by the -ing forms of other verbs

Verb + Verb in the gerund form ( + ing )

Certain verbs are followed by the gerund not the infinitive. A gerund is a verb form ending in “ing” and functioning as a noun.

For example, after the verb avoid we have to use the gerund:

She avoids doing that.
I avoid eating too much fat. (eu evito de comer muita gordura)

Since the Brazilian students usually tend to use the infinitive not the gerund I recommend memorizing the following list of verbs that are followed by the gerund:

List 4) Verbs followed by either infinitives or gerunds
Obs.: There are verbs frequently followed by either gerunds or infinitives, sometimes with no difference in meaning (group a), sometimes with a difference in meaning (group b)

Group a : verb + infinitive or gerund (with no difference in meaning)

Begin

like
Can´t bear

love
Continue

prefer
hate

can´t stand
start

Example: I hate waiting  or I hate to wait

Group b: Verb + infinitive or gerund (with a difference in meaning)

Forget

stop
Regret

try
Remember

Example: She stopped smoking: stop + gerund =quit, give up= parar de
She stopped to smoke stop + infinitive = parar para
In the first sentence “smoke” is the first action, stop is the second action
In the second sentence, “stop” is the first action, she stopped what she was doing to smoke (second action)

II-) Verbs followed by verbs in the subjunctive translation

Some verbs that follow others are translated in Portuguese by the subjunctive

Verbs followed by a (pro)noun + to + an infinitive
Example
The teacher is telling you to study this list

The boss asked his secretary to send a letter = O chefe pediu que sua secretária envie uma carta
