Reading Strategy: LINKING WORDS

Reading strategies for proficiency tests:
Linking words

Hint for proficiency tests
When you have reading comprehension in your proficiency test, remember that your goal is to answer the questions right and not to translate each and every word.
So basically, you have to ignore the words you don´t know.
One strategy is to underline all the linking words in the text. The linking words are important for comprehension because if you know for example, that the meaning of “but” is to connect contrary ideas, you´ll conclude that the idea that comes before “but” is opposite to the idea in the clause that comes after it.

Conjunctions and Prepositions are linking words.

Conjunctions connect clauses and Prepositions connect words.

Examples of conjunctions:

Coordinating conjunctions:

PREPOSITIONS ARE FOLLOWED BY VERB + ING

Don´t forget to add –ing to a verb after a preposition!

There are two infinitive translations in English:

1-      Using to before the verb: to speak = falar, to want = querer, to laugh = rir
2-      Using –ing as a suffix to the verb: She enjoys dancing = Ela curte dançar; He is interested in applying for the new job vacance = Ele está interessado em se candidatar à nova vaga

Prepositions are words that connect two words.
Example of prepositions: in, on, at, about, from, for, by, after, before, of, without, with, along, besides, etc

Exercise: Complete the sentences by adding a correct preposition + Verb-ing
Obs.: Some of the Verbs + ing are nouns (nouns = substantivos). Rosa learned a lot about gardening (gardening = jardinagem)
Example: Thank you ……. (help)………..me  do my task. Thank you for helping do my task.

  1. My cousin insisted …… (pay) ……………….. the restaurant bill.
  2. We´re thinking ……………….. (go) ………………… to Mexico.
  3. She´s very keen ……. …………
  4. They talked …………….  …………..
  5. The teacher punished Emily ………… (cheat) ……………….. in the exam.
  6. Instead …………. (make) ………….. a fuss, you should have complained quietly.
  7. Nataly is always complaining …………… (not have)…………………… much money.

MOST COMMON IRREGULAR VERBS

BASIC LEVEL LIST

Memorise the following verbs in the past affirmative form (column 2), in the infinitive form (column 1) and in the past participle (column 3)

The first column is the present tense in affirmative form for the subjects I, you, we and they. It is also used to form the interrogative form in the past together with the auxiliar verb "did".

To form the negative in the past add "didn´t" as in the example below:

I understood = entendi (column 1)
I didn´t understand = não entendi (didn´t + column 1)
Did you understand? = Você entendeu? (did + subject + column 1 verb)

You can also use the subject (sujeito) + auxiliar verb "will" + verb in column 1 to form the future tense. Example: She will understand = ela compreenderá

Another auxiliar verb to talk about future actions is "be going to". Example: He is going to buy a motorcycle = ele vai comprar uma motocicleta.

The verbs in the 3rd column are used in the Present Perfect Tense and in the Passive form.

Obs. Se você já terminou o curso básico de inglês, é muito provável que você já sabe essa tabela decor

If you know that list by heart, congratulations!

PREPOSITION "TO" FOR PURPOSE

USING "TO" FOR PURPOSE

The preposition "to" is used to show intention. Examples:

I went to the bank to pay a bill.
She called me to invite me to a party.

Notice that the second "to" in the second example above is used to show direction or destination.

Now pay attention to the following examples below:

Where´s the key to my car?
I can´t remember the number to my savings account.

Those are confusing for Brazilian students because in Portuguese we would use "of" instead of "to":

chave do carro = key to the car
número da conta = number to the account

The confusion stems from the fact that the translation to Portuguese for "to" is usually "para"  and for "of" is "de"

But have in mind that the purpose of the key is to open the car. And you need the number to use (make a deposit or withdrawal or transfer) the savings account
